In Memory of Mocha

I didn't expect to feel for you as deep as I did so quickly. You didn't catch my eye the first time I walked around the kennel at the animal shelter but when I saw you, you were sweet and didn't get in the face of the other dogs at the shelter. I guess I should have seen it with how excited you were to get out of your kennel, but I just thought that you were excited after 2 weeks of being in doggie jail. You had such a fun ride in the car and a trip through Petsmart where I spoiled you rotten, buying you much more than you needed. I laughed when we got home and you jumped into the trunk of my car while I was unloading the haul from Petsmart. You loved your Kong toy, watching you chase it around the house made me smile. I was worried with how easily you jumped up and were sniffing things on the counter, looking for something to eat. When you met my dad you wouldn't calm down and you decided that you liked my papasan chair and I knew we were going to have to work on the staying off the furniture thing. I tried to give you a bath, but that was a losing battle. I saw then that you were an escape artist and I didn't have your collar tight enough since you got out of it twice. I felt bad leaving you to go to a meeting at work. I didn't realize when I got home that our time together was almost done. We went out once and we came back inside. You looked so peaceful when you went and laid down in the middle of the living room while I was cooking. I was getting ready to eat myself and you were sniffing around the house in a way that made me worry so I put you back on your leash and took you out. You sniffed, you rolled and then you got free. You unclipped your leash and took off. I almost had you at one point and you took off again. Apparently you thought that we were either playing a game, you smelled an animal, or you were trying to get back to your old home. I thought that you were going to be fast enough. You almost made it across the street before the car hit you. I was horrified. I got to you as quickly as I could and you died in my arms. At least you had a good afternoon. You got to taste freedom again. I miss you Mocha.

Rest in Peace Grandpa

My great grandpa died this morning. He was 98. Strangely though, I don't feel sad because he wanted to go. He lived a long life and his body had given up on him. Not really surprised either because we didn't expect him to live through the week. Don't even know if there's going to be a funeral or anything because he didn't want one. He just wanted to be cremated.

Rest in peace Grandpa Cliff

Expiration

"I'm sorry, that patient expired." I heard that last night as work as I was calling the floor to report something on a lab that was being done. It just sounds so funny when they're talking about a human life. To say that we expired. What does it mean? Are we like that spoiled milk in the back of the refrigerator that should have been thrown out weeks ago when it started smelling bad? Or maybe it's just my morbid curiosity or something but when they say that someone expired, it just makes me think, do we have a "Best if used by" date on our bodies?

RIP Uncle Wayne

As I blogged about last week, my mom's uncle was on his deathbed. He died at 11am yesterday, ironically, at the same time that I was praying for his suffering to be eased and for him to die peacefully. So tomorrow night is the trip to the funeral home to see him and to see the family. And then probably again on Wednesday night and then the funeral is on Thursday. I don't know if I'll be going to the funeral though, which I know it's not expected of me to go, but I still feel like I should, but I can't really miss the time away from the internship and I know that Aunt Jane will understand. Rest in peace Uncle Wayne.

May the road rise to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
the rain fall soft upon your fields and,
until we meet again...
May God hold you in the palm of His Hand.

Rest In Peace Shane...

What worse news to wake up to than someone that you went to school with died... Shane was 3 years behind me, but we went to the same elementary school, middle school, and high school. He was one of the happiest people I knew, even when his cancer was sucking the life out of him. He was first diagnosed with cancer in elementary school and they kicked it into remission. Then a few years later it came back and he beat it once again. Then it struck the third time and Shane just wasn't strong enough. He wasn't expected to live until graduation. He made it that far and everyone applauded when he crossed that stage to get his diploma. Everyone at home knew his story, there were benefit dinners to help pay for his treatments and he was a part of the swim team. He was too young to go, but he went... rest in peace Shane.

God saw you getting tired
When a cure was not to be.
So He wrapped His arms around you,
And whispered, “Come unto me”.
You didn’t deserve what you went through,
And so He gave you rest.
God’s garden must be beautiful,
He only takes the best.
So when I saw you sleeping,
So peaceful and free from pain.
I could not wish you to come back,
to suffer that all again.
