Obituaries, Cars, and Jobs

Yesterday I went to Saginaw to see Grandma P. and to take her a plant that she liked outside our house, so being the good granddaughter that I am, I went and bought her a black eyed susan vine and a creeper for it and went over and planted it for her. I also got lucky enough to get to help my uncle Tom and Tom Harvey from down the street clean out the gutters on her house. Boy do I have great timing. Anyways a little while later grandma and I were sitting on her front porch (which has a roof over it) while it rained and the papergirl's dad brought the paper. What's the first thing that Grandma reads? The obits. She said to me "Let's see who died today" and was just so pedestrian (see def. 3 of the adjective) about it. Now grandma is getting older, so it's understanding that she wants to see if any of her friends may have passed on, but when she goes to the funeral of the cashier's mother from Kroger's, that's stretching it a little. Methinks that grandma needs to get a new hobby. At least she's still going strong for her age, thank god. It's going to be tough on me when she goes. I thank God for every time that I get to spend time with her, just even doing simple things like sitting on her couch and watching Days of Our Lives with her, or sitting on the swing with her in our front yard as she sips a beer after making all that potato salad. I'm glad that she does all the volunteering that she does because I know that it's because she's so active that that's why she's doing so well. In fact, she's craving a casino trip if we go on Sunday for Father's day

Last night we went over to Grandma M.'s to return a roaster that we borrowed for the graduation party. Grandma sent her car in to George's Auto Shop on Monday for a tune up. ATTENTION! If you are ever in Bay City and need car repairs, do NOT go to George's. The mechanic told grandma that her 87 caddy needed $1700 worth of work. She couldn't afford that and my dad is working on her car as we speak and it appears that the problem was a piece of missing tubing that he picked up for free at autozone. Damn mechanics.

Speaking of cars, the form to register my car for parking next year on campus just came in the mail. They want $85 for a parking permit. And I'm only going to be there for one semester. Bastards. My freshmen year it cost me $40 for my parking permit.

Dang, now I really do need to get a job. I knew how much the parking permit was going to be for this year, but I wasn't ready to get the form in the mail. That makes it so much more real. That and the antenna busted off my cell phone yesterday and verizon wanted $15 to replace the antenna on a phone that's 2 years old and that's has been acting very wonky when I go to charge it. But mom and I got into another arguement about my unemployed status last night and she said that I'm not allowed to buy anything new until I get a job. Um, excuse me mom, but I'm 21 years old. I know there's that whole "under my roof, under my rules" thing, but I'm a responsible adult, throw me a fricking bone here. I know that I need a job, it's just a little hard to find one when you're a college student home for the summer in a state that is in a job crisis and unemployed adults are taking anything that they can find
