Mother's Day at the Joe

So this is one of the few years that I haven't seen my Grandma P on Mother's Day. I called her in the morning though and asked her if she'd forgive me for skipping out on Mother's Day because I was able to get tickets to Game 2 of the conference finals for me and my dad. Luckily, Grandma is just as big of a hockey fan so she forgave me and told me to have fun.

We did even though the Wings lost. We picked up my mom's co-worker and her mom in Birch Run at Starbucks and there, I tasted JOY and it was a Java Chip Frappuccino. From there we headed down to Detroit and found a $10 parking spot a few blocks away from Hockeytown Cafe that was run by some Indians with a thick accent wondering "What was going on at the Hockeytown today?" We headed over to Hockeytown Cafe to get something to eat and I had the best BBQ Brisket sandwich that I barely managed to finish before the busboy tried to take away my plate. the guy was kind of annoying, in fact, we thought that he was going to refill my dad's and Sarah's mom's drinks and instead, he bussed the cups.

About 6pm we boarded the free shuttle to the Joe and as we were heading up the mountain of steps, all of use ladies we're handed carnations in celebration of Mother's Day, whether we were mother's or not. And then we were being filmed by a news crew as we came up the steps and then we got free "Join the Red Wave" towels to wave around at the game. We had plenty of time to check out the sites around the Joe, which included a Lego sculpture of Steve Yzerman. That thing had to take some time and patience.

So then came gametime. Our seats were good, we were on a cure so we didn't have to constantly look back and forth and for two periods the Wings were attacking towards us. I shouted my throat raw and had a great time. I also had the ultimate treat of Joe Louis Arena, the Winger's Waffle Cone, which is two scoops of ice cream, chocolate sauce, caramel, whipped cream, sprinkles, nuts and 3 cherries. It's also the most reasonably priced treat at the Joe for only $4.75.

The only thing that tried to ruin my day was the guy sitting behind me. He was obviously drunk and kept trying to start cheers that don't belong at the Joe and then he was going on about what fucking pussies everyone was and how they spent so much money on tickets and they were just sitting there like a bunch of fucking pussies. This went on during all of regulation time. It was SO tempting to turn around and tell him to "Fucking shut up because there are fucking ladies present." But instead I behaved. Plus he disappeared for overtime.

One of the reasons that I was so excited to go to the game was that I went to college with one of the guys that now plays for the Ducks, Chris Kunitz. But somehow he got injured Friday night and wasn't able to play last night. That was slightly disappointing but I didn't quite care so much because he just makes the Ducks that much better between the cheap shots that they hand out and didn't get called for. Not to mention that they needed the NHL's video review to get two of their goals awarded to them. In fact, for the first goal that got reviewed, the goal judge didn't even turn on the light. But that didn't help anyways beause the Wings just weren't shooting and they just didn't have jump.

After the game we couldn't find the shuttle back to Hockeytown Cafe and waited around until another shuttle for Greektown came back and took us all to Hockeytown Cafe. And of course downtown Detroit is so much fun at 11:30pm. There was an interesting homeless lady that we had to dodge on the way back to the car.

All in all, it was fun. Just wish that they would have won.
